In continuation of the subject Chevrolet Corvette C6 Fifth Gear Review I present this post with extended description of the Corvette C6 features.

STYLING

Sharp, classic looks give the Corvette an imposing road presence. The most recent 2008 C6 styling has barely changed from the old version but that's probably a good thing.

HANDLING

It's easy to assume an American sports car won't suit UK roads, but the latest Corvette deals with curves ably. It's easy to drive hard too. Enter a corner too fast and the front-engined Corvette just washes predictably into understeer - from there you can get the tail out if you like with a bit more throttle. The C6 always feels like a heavyweight, though, compared with lithe European rivals.

COMFORT

European-spec Corvette's are more stiffly sprung than their American counterparts, which helps control the body movements of this 1500kg sports car. That does mean the ride's firm, but bump absorption isn't completely compromised. And the driving position is good too. There's an adaptive Magnetic Selective Ride system on the option list, but it's not worth the premium.

QUALITY + RELIABILITY

Cabin quality is akin to a mid-range French family hatchback - if you've ever owned a modern Renault or Peugeot you'll know what we mean. The Corvette's a million miles from a 911, but most people could live with it. Although annoying niggles like a failing electric boot release has been reported on some test cars.

PERFORMANCE

Masterful straight-line speed and the roaring symphony of Chevrolet's V8 engine ensure breathtaking excitement. An abundance of torque means you never doubt that the C6 would be capable of 190mph plus.

ROOMINESS

There's a very useful amount of space in the Corvette, even when it's compared to genuinely useable sports cars like the Porsche 911 or Audi R8. That's because the Corvette's built to meet the demands of the American market, and its no bad thing. The cabin could be packaged more cleverly though, freeing up more storage space.

RUNNING COSTS

A Corvette would not impress your bank manager. Thirsty American sports cars like this tend to depreciate very quickly, and that's before you consider how much petrol the 6.0-litre V8 uses. Or how much a left-hand-drive car with this sort of performance costs to insure.

VALUE FOR MONEY

Chevrolet will sell you a generously specified Corvette C6 for under £50k, and it will comes with a proper warranty and full dealer support. That's excellent value for a bona fide supercar. Annoyingly, if you lived in America, you could buy a Corvette for half that price.

STEREO / SAT NAV

High-end electronics come as standard on the Corvette C6. The sound system is particularly impressive.

ENVIRONMENT

Buying a Corvette is about as environmentally friendly as dowsing a polar bear with petrol and setting it alight: the C6's V8 emits a whopping 316g/km CO2.

Recommended. The latest Corvette C6 is raucous, rapid and relatively cheap to buy. It's still flawed, but its powertrain is much improved making it more exhilarating to drive. You'd have to really want one to forgive the sky-high running costs, but the noise from that V8 alone is almost worth it.

This is the sixth generation of the Chevrolet Corvette, America's long-standing sports car icon, now revised for 2008 with a host of new technical enhancements. It's the Yank's equivalent of the Porsche 911, a high-performance legend that's stuck to the same basic rubber burning, V8-power, rear-drive recipe since 1953.

But, The Times They Are A Changin', as Bob Dylan once sang, so now the GM small block V8 that's at the heart of the modern Corvette has been upgraded to offer better fuel economy, cleaner exhaust emissions... oh, and bucket load more power.

In fact, as global oil prices reach record highs, Chevrolet's gone and made the Corvette's LS3 engine even bigger, increasing its capacity from a wimpy 6.0-litres to 6.2-litres. This means this latest Corvette C6 puts 435bhp at the mercy of your right foot - nearly ten percent more than the outgoing C6 - so it'll shove you from standstill to 60mph in 4.3 seconds and on to 186mph if you really let it flex its muscles. That's faster than an Audi R8.

The revised C6 also has a new smooth paddle-shift auto gearbox with shorter ratios, which combined with the engine's extra urge to markedly improve acceleration and, happily, make the Corvette a more refined drive when you're not trying to break land speed records.

The Corvette C6 is available with a targa roof and lighter, harder, track-derived variants like the ZO6 can also be imported for a premium. On the basic C6, the optional exhaust pack we had fitted to our test car is an absolute must. It frees up a further 9bhp and provides the Corvette with the thunderous, raucous soundtrack it deserves.

Yet despite the extra glut of performance, the 2008 Corvette C6 really is more economical to run than before. It'll achieve over 20mpg in town if you're light-footed, according to Chevrolet. We weren't, to be honest, but the C6 didn't drain the tank quite as quickly as we'd expected. That is relative to other supercars with massive V8 engines, mind you...

OK, so through the bends the Corvette still feels like a blunt instrument compared to a Porsche 911. And high-tech Japanese tools like the Nissan GT-R are on another planet. But criticisms about the previous Corvette's wooden steering have at least been addressed; it's now much more feelsome than before. And the standard C6's chassis set-up has benefited from the hardcore ZO6 version's Nurburgring development programme too. It handles a challenging road perfectly adequately but, even so, the muscular Corvette's feels at its best bashing up straight, wide stretches of asphalt.

Reasons to run a mile? Well the Corvette's cabin quality is wide of the European mark, it'll depreciate quickly and it's available in left-hand-drive only.

But, buying a new Corvette is not as crazy an idea as it used to be. It's got a decent sized boot, is relatively comfortable day-to-day and you can import one through official UK GM dealerships, with a three year warranty. The latest 2008 powertrain enhancements make the Corvette a more useable, more realistic ownership proposition too. But its bargain basement price remains its strongest asset - you won't find a genuine supercar icon for less than £50k anywhere else.

The General has released the in-car footage of the Corvette ZR-1 lapping the Nurburgring in 7:26.4, hitting 180 mph on the 12.9-mile straight and beating out the Z06's time, set in 2005 by Jan Magnussen by almost 17 seconds. Jim Mero is behind the wheel and just as a reminder; the lap was done on the same Michelin Pilot Sport 2s as the production model, and retains the same ride height, engine calibrations and emissions equipment, along with running pump gas.

Chevrolet's brawny plastic-bodied two-seater has long been a dream machine for countless enthusiasts. Today, that dream is more in reach than ever. The fourth generation or "C4" version of these cars are absolute steals on used-car lots.

These potent performers made their debut for 1984, replacing the soft, boulevardier 1968-82 "Shark" design. With vastly improved aerodynamics and extensive use of aluminium in its construction, the C4 was enormously more capable than its predecessor.

Throughout the C4's long production run, practically every model year brought significant improvements, including revised suspension, higher-quality interiors, and new electronic performance aids. Horsepower for 1984 was a somewhat tame 205, but it went up by 25 hp the next year and continued to steadily climb. A convertible was introduced for 1986, and the following year horsepower reached 240.

For 1990, the C4 got a redesigned dashboard, followed a year later with an exterior facelift that included more rounded front- and rear-fascia styling. For 1992, horsepower jumped to 300. From 1990 to 1995, Chevrolet offered the limited-production ZR-1, which was powered by a 375-405hp Lotus-designed V8. Output of the regular small-block-V8 C4 peaked in 1996, at an optional 330hp.

With strong V8 power and exceptional handling, any Corvette C4 is a tremendously potent machine, even against some of today's pricier new performance cars. Best of all, you can find loads of good C4s practically anywhere in the U.S. for less than $10,000.

When shopping for a C4, it's best to look for as late a model as you can, to take advantage of the many refinements the design received over the years. The most desirable cars are the 1992 and later ones. Besides having considerably more power, their softer styling is less 1980s "high-tech" and thus doesn't look as dated at this point.

Early C4 coupes (1984-91) show up by the truckload for less than eight grand, with a fair number of them listing for under $5000. But realistically, you should expect to pay $6000 or more for a decent one. Scrounge up at least another thousand or two on top of that if you have your heart set on a good 1992-96. As for ZR-1s, forget about 'em - they currently sell for about $25-$40k.

Convertibles command about a 30-percent premium over equivalent coupes, which basically puts the 1992-96 ragtops out of our $10k Budget-Speed cap. Earlier convertibles, however, are still within range.

So while the performance-car world is drooling over new C6s or shopping for used C5s, these cars' fine predecessor is going for clearance-sale prices. And that's great for you - a good used C4 can offer more thrills per dollar than most performance cars, making them well worth a look.

General Motors made an official announcement that, this spring, Europe will get the Chevrolet Corvette Competition Limited Edition.
The limited run Corvette Competition, based on the C6 Coupe, will be powered by the 6.2 liter V8 engine and will feature air scoops with honeycomb pattern in the front grill, double twin exhaust pipes at the rear and the Z06 rear spoiler and 5 spoke alloy wheels in Competition Grey Color.
The car will be available in black paint finish and, for the purpose of keeping the car as lightweight as possible, the number of available option are limited.
Chevrolet has already started taking orders for the Corvette Competition LE and the first cars expected to be delivered in April.

2008 Fireblade Concept Corvette

The Corvette ZR1 was lacking anything. It’s got the whole package - the power, looks, and even a (relatively) decent price tag. Apparently South African designer Idries Noah saw something much more and came up with his incredible design using the ZR1 as a platform. If you recognize the name, it’s because Idries also came up with the unofficial Ferrari F250 Concept that we drooled over back in December. His latest design, dubbed the Fireblade, takes inspiration from the Stingray Corvette, Gillet Vertigo, and Shelby Daytona. Like the ZR1 Corvette, it features the supercharged LS9 V8 displayed for the world to see under the clear portion of the hood. The result is a very attractive combination, and it’s a shame that the car exists only in the digital world. Perhaps, like the Vandenbrink 599 GTO, enough people with excessive amounts of discretionary income will be interested in the design enough to consider a production version. Idries Noah: "It's been a while but I'm finally done with the new concept. It's totally different to the F250. I decided to go for a front engine rear wheel drive setup. It needed to be a brute, a car that has muscle car qualities. It needed to reflect raw power yet not be vulgar. With a 6.1 L Supercharged V8 under the bonnet it's guaranteed to be properly quick." Compare it with the other Concept Chevrolet Corvette Z03.

2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

19 years after its first release, a new Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is set to reclaim the title as the king. As the most powerful production Corvette ever, the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is designed to compete with the best exotic sports cars in the world but retails at a fraction of the cost of equal European supercars.Powered by a new supercharged LS9 6.2-liter V8 engine, the 2009 ZR1 will offer at least 620 hp and 595 lb-ft of torque with a top speed of over 200 mph. Helping achieve that is a supercharger complemented with an integrated charge cooling system for maximum performance. A 6-speed, close-ratio transmission and a high-capacity dual-disc clutch deliver the power to the rear axle. While Chevrolet have yet to release official performance figures, the ZR1 is expected to be the first production Corvette to achieve a top speed of at least 200 mph and is likely to reach 60 mph in around 3 seconds. With features of unique, exposed carbon-fiber body panels, a raised hood with a window to the LS9 engine and massive 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels, there’s little chance the new Corvette ZR1 will be mistaken for any other model. It also wears distinguishing blue accents, including the engine cover visible through the hood window, the brake calipers and the rear fascia badge — the only rear fascia badge affixed to current-generation Chevrolet Corvettes.The Corvette ZR1 is built on the same aluminum-intensive chassis as the Corvette Z06 and features similar independent SLA front and rear suspensions, with aluminum upper and lower control arms. Where the Corvette ZR1 differs is the suspension tuning, which was optimized for the car’s steamroller-wide front and rear tires.
The brakes are visible through the Corvette ZR1’s exclusive wheels: 20-spoke alloy rims that measure 19 inches in diameter in the front and 20 inches in the rear. They come standard with a bright, Sterling Silver paint finish and chrome versions are optional. The wheels are shod in Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires developed specifically for the ZR1, measuring P285/30ZR19 in front and P335/25ZR20 in the rear.

2008 Chevrolet Corvette

An all-new LS3 6.2-liter V8 engine that produces 430 horsepower and 424 lb-ft of torque is standard for the 2008 Chevrolet Corvette coupe and convertible. Interior trim is updated including a wrapped center trim plate with Cyber pattern brushed aluminum accents and an available custom Leather-Wrapped Interior Package. Shift effort for the 6-speed manual transmission is improved and shift times are quicker for the paddle-shift 6-speed automatic.

Classic Corvette 1953

The Corvette was General Motor's answer to the ever growing demand of European roadsters in the US. When designing the Corvette, Chevrolet's engineers focused on saving weight to allow the Corvette to compete with these small roadsters. Production started in June 1953 in a temporary facility in Flint, Michigan. All 300 cars produced in 1953 were white with red interiors. For 1954 Chevrolet planned a 10000 car production, but of the 3640 cars produced, a third remained unsold at year's end. Corvette's end seemed near when only 700 units rolled off the line in 1955.
It was the success of the 1955 Ford Thunderbird that was essential for the Corvette's future. To answer that success Chevrolet decided to completely restyle the Corvette for 1956. Revision were carried through to the suspension, engine and exterior. After a difficult first three years, 1956 was a turning point for the better with production figures increasing every year. The 10000 car mark was reached in 1960.

There have been six generations of the Corvette so far. The generations can be referred to as versions C1 through C6, but the first generation is more commonly referred to as a solid-axle, based on the fact that independent rear suspension (IRS) was not available until 1963. The first generation started in 1953 and ended in 1962. The original Corvette emblem incorporated an American flag into the design of 1953 Corvette; this was later dropped, since associating the flag with a product was frowned upon.New York's Waldorf Astoria hotel was the host of the 1953 Motorama. This edition is best remembered for the introduction of a motoring legend; the Corvette. The Corvette definitely wasn't an immediate hit and after three years of production it was almost canceled altogether.

The Corvette was propelled by a 150 bhp straight six engine, which was mated to a Powerglide 3-speed auto 'box. A 'hotter' cam was fitted halfway through 1954, which was good for another 5 bhp. In 1955, the first series' final year, a 195 bhp V8 and a 3-speed manual were added to the line-up.

In 1953, Chevrolet presented the Corvette concept car, which was the prototype for the first American sports car and the first fiberglass-bodied production car in America. This American icon was one of the few Motorama dream cars to go into production with styling virtually unchanged.
This 1953 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster pre-production vehicle was on display at the 1953 Motorama at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.
The Motoramas of the 1950s were showcases of technical and styling innovations that toured several large cities.
Visitors were given a glimpse of future automobiles, and were entertained by orchestras and dance performances.

Concept Chevrolet Corvette Z03

Similar in appearance to "Ugur Sahin Design" earlier Ferrari Dino Concept, the new Corvette Z03 is based on the much cheaper Chevrolet Corvette Z06 although with that car's proven motorsports record, it shouldn't prove to be too much of a step down.
Undeniably still a Corvette, the Ugur Sahin Z03 manages to successfully update design elements from classic Chevrolet Corvettes of the past including the twin rear lights and the razor-edged panels of the Sting Ray.
Some Ferrari-like design elements have understandably also crept in such as the twin air scoops in the nose and the side vents behind the front wheel arches.
As well as the exterior, further changes have been made to the interior and, more importantly, the Corvette's V8 powerplant. There will be three engine choices in total, ranging from a hardly inconsiderable 500bhp to a mind-blowing 750bhp, which easily trumps the range-topping Corvette ZR1's 628bhp.
The Z03 will also come in at up to 50kg lighter than the standard Corvette and thanks to involvement from former Chevy Corvette chief engineer Dave McLellan should be good for go as well as show. Further details will be released in March with an ambitious target of delivery to customers by the end of the year.

Chevrolet Corvette Z03 is one of the first projects that came from "Ugur Sahin Design", which was formed by Axel van Mourik and Ugur Sahin in the summer of 2007.
The Corvette Z03 is actually the first in what the company intends to be a series of high-end, high-performance limited edition vehicles based on existing cars. "Ugur Sahin Design" teamed up with suppliers such as Flybrid Systems, Modesi Design, Fischer Motorsports and Kirkham Motorsports on the Corvette Z03 Concept.
The last time "Ugur Sahin Design" was widely discussed, it was for a gorgeous modern Ferrari Dino rendering that had us hoping for a production version.
"Ugur Sahin Design" plans to put the Corvette Z03 Concept into production by the end of 2008 and deliver 100 cars.

Dutch studio "Ugur Sahin Design", which is famous for its 3D-concepts Ferrari Dino и Audi Locus (summer 2007), presented its new project. This time Dutch designers chose American legend Chevrolet Corvette for their concept.
The Chevrolet Corvette Z06, stylized as Corvettes of the third generation, which were produced in the middle of 70th, is used as a base for the concept. Dutch design house penned an extreme version of the American sports car dressed in an attractive carbon fiber body. According to “Ugur Sahin Design”, the Corvette Z03 features a series of mechanical upgrades including three engine packages which range from 500 to 750 HP. The approximate weight of the car is expected 1375 kg, which is about 23 kg less then Corvette Z06.
More detailed information about the project will become in March, 2008. Sales are expected to begin at the end of this year.
Corvette Z03 are planned to be put into a limited edition run of 100 units. Each customer will be able to choose personalized touches that include custom mixed paint, upgraded interior treatments including gauges, dashboard, custom created Recaro seats and more.

2006 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible is an American sports car. So when GM tossed me the keys to a 2006 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible, it was thrilling. After all, the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible lists for $51,390 with a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty and an EPA estimate of 17 mpg city/27 mpg highway.
If you've always dreamed of a Corvette, the 2006 Corvette Convertible is the most technologically advanced, roadworthy and usable Corvette you could imagine. I loved driving it around. For $70,000 you get a 505 hp monster with a 7.0 liter V8 engine that will undoubtedly pin you to your seat at full throttle. By some measures, the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible is a bargain. Measure it against the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, Dodge Viper or BMW Z4 M Roadster, and the horsepower per dollar equation favors the Chevy. It may be the best bang for the buck in the category.

The challenge for Corvette comes not from above, but from below. How can you justify spending over $50,000 for a Chevrolet Corvette Convertible when you can pick up a Mazda MX-5 Miata, a Pontiac Solstice GXP or a Saturn Sky Red Line for under $30,000? Or how about a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Convertible, which is rated to produce 505 hp for around $47,000?

The good news is that there are lots of good choices out there. I can't wait to drive them all - but I would gladly drive the Corvette Convertible every day.

Corvette Z06

Corvette Z06 refers to a super high-performance version of the Chevrolet Corvette.

The 1963 Corvette Z06 could only be ordered in the Coupe body style, just like today's Z06 but only being able to order the option in the Fixed Roof Coupe. The original Corvette Z06 cars were also limited production cars with only 199 being built in five production runs. The first cars were built for established racers such as Mickey Thompson. Six cars were built in October 1962 and sold to the dealers that sponsored Corvette race teams. These cars were picked up at the factory in Saint Louis and driven on the road to California. Within weeks the Z06 Sting Ray had won its first race at Riverside.

The Corvette Z07 is a phenomenon. Despite a substandard interior, its power, dynamics, and styling have given it international credibility the C5 struggled to achieve and the gold-chain-inspiring C3 and C4 could only dream of. Now it's talked of as a competitor for Porsche 911, Aston Martin V-8 Vantage, various BMW Ms, and Mercedes AMGs.

Word in Detroit is the long-awaited Corvette Z07, codenamed the Blue Devil after Rick Wagoner's alma mater's NCAA team, is now called Z07. Purists at GM have balked at naming it the Corvette SS, after Zora Arkus-Duntov's definitive Chevy sport racer. Corvette Super Sport had been the expected name for the last year or so.

It's not coming as soon as you'd hoped: It'll be a 2009 model. Bet on the 505-horsepower Z06 becoming the standard C7 Corvette.

The Corvette Z07/SS/Blue Devil is fast becoming one of the worst kept secrets in Detroit. It's not for GM's lack of trying to keep the lid on it, but rather on account of the zealous nature of the Corvette Nation. They're an impatient bunch and are having a hard time waiting for next year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit, where many suspect the super Corvette will bow.

The shaky shots could show some serious braking hardware and what appears to be more extreme air extractor vents behind the front wheels. Aside from that, it appears the Corvette Z07 may look much like the Z06. We have to qualify all this with the disclaimer that the car is most likely not a final production model and may be nothing like what we eventually see on stage in January. Still, a polycarbonate window? We admit, didn't see that one coming.

Let's have a look at what the Corvette staff have been working up for the ultra-fast coupe class, the 2009 Corvette SS. At least SS is the name most used in referring to this 600-plus-hp, supercharged beauty. You might think it looks like today's Corvette, except for the tape over the fenders and the black covering on the hood. But you'd be wrong.

Let’s go through the subtle—but very important—changes needed to make this a 200-mph car for the track. We think the hood covering hides a new bulge there—a necessary tweak to make room for that supercharger nestled near the Corvette at the top of the 6.2-liter V8 engine.

There's also a solid possibility that the new hood on the new Corvette is made of carbon fiber instead of the traditional Corvette fiberglass. If so, that's a major move toward weight savings. Based on the black top we’ve seen on our spy shots of this puppy in blue and then again in red—though it’s new to the yellow, which we’ve also already seen—we feel even more strongly that the prototypes are already carrying carbon-fiber black roof panels.

You might check out the stingy aero lip atop the deck in the rear. That’s new to the Corvette line, and a necessary accessory when traveling at high speed: At speed, the lip catches the air stream and forces the stream upward, creating a down pressure on the rear wheels (always good to have ultimate traction when moving at this car's hyperspeeds).

That black lower rear fascia arrangement surrounding the exhaust tips also looks new to us.

The rear view also shows new, stingy "mud flaps" that extend the fenders to cover the width of the Michelin tires. We told you before that Michelin and Goodyear were bidding for the tire contract for this vehicle, and so far it’s looking good for Michelin to take Good years off the Corvette for the first time ever. The Michelin sidewall details include "light load" and "outside" designations, with separate designs for each wheel. Rear wheels probably have an aspect ratio of 35 on 20-in. rims. Another detail near the fender is hidden beneath the black tape—probably two separate slots for air evacuation.

Finally, we see the design of the wheels themselves once again. Behind the dual five-spoke design on the outside of the rims, there are 10 additional spokes set inboard. As with the carbon-fiber body parts, the wheel design offers ultra-light, unsprung weight to aid handling and ride and to cut down on the vehicle's overall weight. Boy, is this beauty gonna need it.

The Chevrolet Corvette is a sports car that has been manufactured by Chevrolet since 1953. It is built today at a General Motors assembly plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky, but in the past it was built in Flint, Michigan and St. Louis, Missouri. It was the first all-American sports car built by an American car manufacturer. The National Corvette Museum and annual National Corvette Homecoming are also located in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

History of Chevrolet Corvette.

While the style of a car may be just as important to some as to how well the car runs, it was not until 1927, when General Motors hired designer Harley Earl, that automotive styling and design became important to American automobile manufacturers. What Henry Ford did for automobile manufacturing principles, Harley Earl did for car design. Most of GM's flamboyant "dream car" designs of the 1950s are directly attributable to Earl, leading one journalist to comment that the designs were "the American psyche made visible." Harley Earl loved sports cars, and GIs returning after serving overseas in the years following World War II were bringing home MGs, Jaguars, Alfa Romeos, and the like. In 1951, Nash Motors began selling a two-seat sports car, the Nash-Healey, that was made in partnership with the Italian designer Pinin Farina and British auto engineer Donald Healey. Earl convinced GM that they also needed to build a two-seat sports car. Earl and his Special Projects crew began working on the new car later that year, which was code named "Opel." The result was the 1953 Corvette, unveiled to the public at that year's Motorama car show. The original concept for the Corvette emblem incorporated an American flag into the design, but was changed well before production since associating the flag with a product was frowned upon.

Taking its name from the corvette, a small, maneuverable fighting frigate (the credit for the naming goes to Myron Scott), the first Corvettes were virtually handbuilt in Flint, Michigan in Chevrolet's Customer Delivery Center, now an academic building at Kettering University. The outer body was made out of then-revolutionary fiberglass, selected in part because of steel quotas left over from the war. Underneath that radical new body were standard Chevrolet components, including the "Blue Flame" inline six-cylinder truck engine, two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, and drum brakes from Chevrolet's regular car line. Though the engine's output was increased somewhat, thanks to a triple-carburetor intake exclusive to the Corvette, performance of the car was decidedly lackluster. Compared to the British and Italian sports cars of the day, the Corvette was underpowered, required a great deal of effort as well as clear roadway to bring to a stop, and even lacked a "proper" manual transmission. Up until that time, the Chevrolet division was GM's entry-level marque, known for excellent but no-nonsense cars. Nowhere was that more evident than in the Corvette. A Paxton supercharger became available in 1954 as a dealer-installed option, greatly improving the Corvette's straight-line performance, but sales continued to decline.

GM was seriously considering shelving the project, leaving the Corvette to be little more than a footnote in automotive history, and would have done so if not for two important events. The first was the introduction in 1955 of Chevrolet's first V8 engine since 1919, and the second was the influence of a Soviet emigre in GM's engineering department, Zora Arkus-Duntov. Arkus-Duntov simply took the new V8 and backed it with a three-speed manual transmission. That modification, probably the single most important in the car's history, helped turn the Corvette from a two-seat curiosity into a genuine performer. It also earned Arkus-Duntov the rather inaccurate nickname "Father of the Corvette."

Another key factor in the Corvette's survival was Ford's introduction, in 1955, of the two-seat Thunderbird, which was billed as a "personal luxury car", not a sports car. Even so, the Ford-Chevrolet rivalry in those days demanded that GM not appear to back down from the challenge. The "T-Bird" was changed to a four-seater in 1958. And the1957 Chevrolet Corvette Bel Air is one of the most recognizable American cars of all time.
